Peter Grimes at Covent Garden

12/06/09

Britten's opera is among the forthcoming releases from mpLIVE, in a fascinating 1958 performance from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Peter Pears sings the noble anti-hero opposite the Elllen Orford of Sylvia Fisher (who does not appear in the Decca studio recording made a few months later). Perhaps the most singular quality, however, is the conducting of Rafael Kubelik, who was pleased to champion this work during his brief but treasurable tenure as Music Director of the Royal Opera House. However... the extant recording is missing the last minute of Act 2. mpLIVE intends to add this music from another out-of-copyright recording (making full acknowledgment of its history and provenance) in order to preserve the musical and emotional health of listeners to this powerful performance. If you know of or have access to a performance of 'Peter Grimes' made before 1 January 1959, please let us know by emailing mpLIVE@musicpreserved.org.uk. We'd love to hear from you.
